Bathroom Remodel in Cromwell, CT | Custom Walk-In Shower & Double Vanity Renovation
Bathroom Remodel in Cromwell, CT | Custom Walk-In Shower & Double Vanity Renovation
Project Overview
This bathroom remodel in Cromwell, Connecticut, located near TPC River Highlands, was designed to transform a dated kids’ bathroom into a modern, durable, and steam-ready shower space. The homeowners wanted to upgrade the original tub and shower combination while improving the overall layout and design of the room. Our team at First Choice Bathroom Remodeling redesigned the space to include a fully tiled walk-in shower with a steam-friendly enclosure, a new double sink vanity, modern brass fixtures, and bright new flooring. By carefully combining high-quality materials with thoughtful design choices, we were able to create a bathroom that is both stylish and highly functional for everyday family use.

The Challenge
The original bathroom featured a standard tub and shower combination with a small recessed niche and a soffit above the shower area, which limited design options and prevented the installation of a fully enclosed steam-style shower. The homeowners wanted a deeper steam experience and a more modern aesthetic, which meant the space needed structural adjustments. In addition, the oversized vanity made the room feel crowded and out of proportion. Our challenge was to redesign the shower area, modify the soffit to allow for full glass enclosure, and update the vanity area while maintaining a clean layout that aligned visually with the windows and lighting.

Our Solution
To achieve the homeowners’ vision, we extended the existing soffit all the way to the edge of the shower opening, allowing the glass company to fully enclose the shower from floor to soffit for an improved steam experience. The walk-in shower was completely tiled — including the walls and ceiling — using elegant 2x8-inch deep blue tiles from Genrose, creating a striking focal point in the bathroom.
For the shower base, we installed a DreamLine SlimLine 60” x 32” single-threshold shower pan, which is made of high-gloss acrylic reinforced with fiberglass. To ensure maximum durability and stability, we poured concrete underneath the base during installation, creating a solid and long-lasting foundation. The shower walls were constructed using Johns Manville GoBoard lightweight cement backer boards, paired with professional waterproofing to protect the structure from moisture and ensure long-term performance.
We also tiled the wall behind the toilet to create a cohesive and finished look throughout the bathroom.
For the vanity area, we replaced the large original unit with a
better-proportioned vanity purchased from Ferguson Home, along with matching hardware. Two sinks were centered beneath a
large single mirror that aligns perfectly with the two windows, while elegant
brass sconce lighting was installed on each side to enhance both functionality and style. Finally, a
light-colored floor tile was installed to brighten the room and tie the entire design together.

The Final Result
The completed bathroom now feels dramatically more open and modern compared to the original design. Removing the main shower wall helped improve the layout and allowed the new custom shower with frameless glass enclosure to become the focal point of the room. The floating vanity with color-changing LED lighting adds a contemporary design feature while also improving floor space and making the bathroom easier to clean. Combined with the LED mirror, custom tile work, Schluter waterproofing system, and modern lighting, the final result is a beautiful and functional bathroom that blends modern design with long-lasting materials. The homeowner was extremely happy with the transformation and the improved usability of the space.

FAQ
Can a regular shower be converted into a steam-friendly shower?
Yes, a standard shower can often be modified to support a steam-style shower experience by properly enclosing the space. In this Cromwell, CT bathroom remodel, we extended the existing soffit to the edge of the shower opening so the glass company could fully enclose the shower from floor to soffit. Fully tiling the walls and ceiling, along with proper waterproofing and sealing, helps trap steam inside the shower area and prevents moisture from escaping into the rest of the bathroom.
What type of materials are best for building a durable tiled shower?
For long-lasting performance, professional bathroom remodelers use a combination of cement backer boards, waterproofing systems, and high-quality tile installation methods. In this project, we used Johns Manville GoBoard lightweight cement backer boards, along with professional waterproofing to protect the shower structure from moisture. The shower was finished with 2x8-inch Genrose tiles, which provide both durability and a modern design aesthetic.
Why pour concrete under an acrylic shower pan?
Although acrylic shower pans are reinforced with fiberglass, adding a concrete base underneath during installation significantly improves stability and prevents flexing over time. This technique makes the shower base feel solid underfoot, reduces movement, and helps extend the lifespan of the shower installation. It’s a method many professional bathroom remodelers use to ensure long-term durability and performance.
