While the vanity top itself was in decent shape and was of sentimental value to the homeowner, the remaining space was dull and unattractive and lacking both style and modern appeal. The weighty fixtures, outdated finishes, and conservative tub-shower configuration offered no visual enjoyment and no functional luxury. The Homeowner’s Vision: A Modern Sanctuary with a Personal Touch

The homeowners envisioned a bathroom that blended sophisticated modern looks with warm elegance. They wanted a dramatic departure from the dark and dated look, trading instead for light surfaces, clean-lined surfaces, and high-end textures. Yet they wanted to keep their existing marble-look countertop for history and for cost-saving convenience.

Their dream was a large walk-in shower in place of the old-fashioned tub, large-format modern tiles for a smooth, seamless look, and matte black faucets to bring crisp contrast and sophistication. They envisioned a look that was as beautiful as it would be functional for daily living—a private oasis in their West Hartford home.To achieve it, we selected a basic yet elegant color scheme well-suited to a Southington bathroom. A source of warmth was introduced through the use of a vertical slatted wood-grain appearance tile wall in the shower and as the backdrop for the new vanity. This natural texture added depth and personality, stunningly counterbalancing the clean whites and soft marble finishes that dominate across the room. We complemented these choices with matte black hardware and fixtures, adding a graphic contrast that pulled the entire design together and elevated the modern charm of the bathroom to a higher plane.

The Remodeling Process: Crafting a Masterpiece

With the owner's dream in mind, we began by gutting the bathroom completely, down to the studs to create a tabula rasa. Gone were the old tub-shower unit, the tattered old floor tiles, and the antique-style fixtures.

We installed a spacious new walk-in shower, using large-format gray porcelain tile for the shower walls. The tile created a sleek, smooth appearance that instantly modernized the space. For a dramatic finishing touch, we built a recessed niche lined with stunning hexagon mosaic tiles in grays and white. The same gorgeous hexagon tile extended onto the shower floor, creating visual continuity and an aspect of luxury.

To tile over the small black floor tiles, we laid beautiful porcelain tiles in a crisp chevron pattern along the bathroom floor. The floors had a Schluter System installed that which allowed constant temperature regulation. The light tiles with their gentle veining provided a modern geometric appearance and helped to reflect daylight, making the room feel open and airy.

While the owners kept their marble-look countertop on their vanity, we installed a new custom white shaker-style cabinet in its place below. Sleek matte black hardware on the vanity doors and drawers complemented nicely the black towel bars, shower fixtures, and faucet, bringing dramatic contrast into the room.

Lighting was enhanced as well with new vanity lighting above the mirror and recessed LED light in the ceiling for full, even illumination. Black shelves over the toilet provided stylish storage without detracting from the sleek, unadorned appearance.
