Bathroom Remodeling in Berlin, CT – A Modern Transformation
Bathroom Remodeling in Berlin, CT – A Modern Transformation
Transforming a dated bathroom into a modern, inviting space can seem daunting, but with the right team it’s absolutely achievable, and even quick. We recently completed a bathroom renovation in Berlin, Connecticut that shows just how dramatic the results can be.
In this case study, we’ll walk you through the before, during, and after of this project. The homeowner’s goal was a clean, contemporary upgrade to replace an old design. As a locally licensed Connecticut contractor, First Choice Bathroom Remodeling approached this Berlin, CT bathroom remodel with a focus on quality, honesty, and efficiency. Read on to see the transformation unfold and learn why we’re the first choice for bathroom remodeling in Berlin, CT.
Before the Remodel
The original bathroom was outfitted with a large jetted corner tub surrounded by beige, patterned tile. Dated fixtures and a dim lighting setup made the space feel dark and confined. The style was straight out of the early 2000s, a far cry from the modern look the homeowner envisioned. Notably, the only elements set to stay were the relatively new toilet and an in-wall shower niche shelf that the homeowner found useful. Everything else, such as the bulky jacuzzi tub, old vanity, faded floor tiles, and outdated light fixtures would be removed to make way for a brighter, more open design. The “before” picture highlights how much potential was waiting to be unlocked in this Berlin bathroom.
The homeowner chose First Choice Bathroom Remodeling because they wanted an honest assessment of what could be done and a team with local expertise. Being based in Connecticut, we’re familiar with Berlin’s homes and building codes, so we knew we could modernize this space safely and efficiently. We agreed on a plan to eliminate the cumbersome tub in favor of a spacious walk-in shower, install all-new finishes, and improve the lighting all while keeping the project on a tight timeline.

During the Renovation
Once our team got started, the bathroom was gutted down to the studs. We removed the old tub, vanity, wall tiles, and flooring. In the photo above, you can see the bathroom in mid-renovation with the subfloor exposed and wall cavities open. This stage is critical, it’s where we fix any hidden issues and build the new bathroom’s foundation. We updated the plumbing by installing modern PEX water lines (the red and blue pipes visible in the image) and relocating drains to fit the new shower configuration. The original framing for the niche shelf was preserved in the wall, so we could integrate a new tiled niche in the same spot. We also added new insulation (visible as white batting in the walls) to improve energy efficiency and soundproofing, an often overlooked upgrade that makes a big difference in comfort.
During the construction process, our licensed team took care of everything, from obtaining the necessary permits to ensuring all electrical work (like wiring for new lights and an exhaust fan) met code. We discovered that some sections of the subfloor were water-damaged from the old tub, so we replaced those with sturdy new plywood for a solid, long lasting base. By addressing these structural details during the remodel, we prevent problems down the line, an example of our honest, quality-first approach. Despite the surprises, we stayed on schedule. In fact, this entire Berlin bathroom remodel was completed in just about 5 days, minimizing disruption for the homeowner. Throughout the process, we kept the work area clean and organized, reflecting our belief that a clean job site is key to a safe, efficient renovation.
Post Renovation
The final result is a bright, modern bathroom that feels like a completely new space. Stepping into the renovated room, the most striking change is where the bulky tub once sat. It’s now replaced by a sleek walk-in shower with a low threshold base for easy entry. Large format porcelain tiles (with a elegant white and gray marble pattern) line the shower walls, giving a luxury look with minimal grout lines. We built a new tiled niche shelf in the shower (using the original niche’s location) for handy storage of shampoos and soaps, a detail that the homeowner loved. All the fixtures are upgraded to a bold matte black finish, including a square rainfall showerhead and a versatile handheld sprayer. The black hardware pops against the light tile and ties together with the bathroom’s other black accents.
The lighting and ventilation are also vastly improved. We installed a quiet exhaust fan with an integrated LED light in the ceiling (visible in the photo) to keep the bathroom fresh and well lit. Additional recessed lights and a modern vanity light fixture brighten the space evenly, eliminating the gloomy corners that were present before. Speaking of the vanity, the old wood cabinet and sink gave way to a stylish new vanity in a deep espresso (nearly black) color, with a crisp white quartz countertop and undermount sink. Above it, a sleek black framed mirror and updated light fixture complete the contemporary look. The vanity not only looks great but also offers better storage and organization than the previous one.
We kept the original toilet as planned (it was in excellent condition), but its surroundings are completely transformed. The walls are now a clean, neutral paint color (classic white) that makes the room feel more open and reflects light. For the flooring, we installed brand new waterproof flooring in a rich, dark tone that resembles natural wood but is far more water resistant, perfect for a bathroom. This dark floor, along with the black door and matte fixtures, contrasts beautifully with the bright walls and tiles, achieving the clean, high contrast aesthetic the homeowner wanted. Every detail, from the black towel ring and faucet to the fresh trim around the window, was carefully chosen to create a cohesive modern style. The homeowner was thrilled, their bathroom is now unrecognizable from before, boasting both improved functionality and a design that belongs in this decade.
